Quilty by Association

Sew, you have a fiber arts minor, did you think you'll escape your love affair with textiles?

Mrs SFDaddy is a rock star in the quilting and fabrics game. This is a link to one of her sample quilts  that uses the fabrics from wonderful designs of Eric Carle who does the Very Hungry Caterpillar series. The girls are quickly becoming "Rockettes" in their own rights. Red1 is altering tshirts into skirts and tank tops, looking cute. Red2 can weave up a friendship bracelet like its a military exercise.

I am a little quilty by association. What am I doing? I helped with two quilts and have a third one in the UFO pile. In quilt-speak that's an UN-FINISED-OBJECT. The first was a quilt for Red1. we took our old shirts and cut them up into squares, layered them together, sewed then up, snipped the edges and we had a great scrappy quilt.

The second project was a quilted pillow, not pictured here. Red1 picked the fabrics and we figured out how to make a giant pillow.

The UFO is my pirate quilt. We all used to play an online pirate game and I had a character I grew pretty fond of. This is the sketch and fabrics selected to pull it off. The fabrics run from tropical to treasure. We're looking for the original sketch of the quilt. The drawing here is on Red1 drew up.

You don't have to be sewing to have a UFO. But you also don't have to be haunted by them. I'm granting you all amnesty from being chased down by your UFO's. Just try not to be abducted by them.

D Day of the Dead in fabric

Day of the Dead (Dia de Los Muertos) - This is the link to the Atlanta Day of the Dead festivities. Open it up to hear some good mood musica for this post.

One of the things that Mrs. SF Daddy keeps occupied with is a home business selling fabric. She's an artist, loves to sew, selects fabrics that appeal to her and hopefully appeals to her customers. So far, most of her customers agree with her stylistic sensibilities enough to keep us in business and pretty happy.

One of her favorite motifs is the Day of the Dead fabric. Love the happy skellytons. While she and the girls are off around the country at sewing and quilting shows, I get to cut it up for orders. The selections here are some of my current favorites. Here's a link to our shop if anyone's also interested in that. :)

Usually celebrated in early November, I'm thinking about the Day of the Dead this week as I remember my grandfather who left us this year. Here's to you! Salude!

The post labeled, God, is funny. It contains the psuedo transcript of my daughter's first viewing of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. It really encapsulates one of the reasons I started this blog in the first place and I want to share it with you again:

J is six and today we watched Star Wars Episode I. Here are J's comments.

Never tell a Jedi, "You're under arrest."

Who was that white lady? (Watching the pod race.)

What kind of fabric are their clothes made of? (Anakin and his mother's on Tatooine.) Information about the costumes. And another article.

I'd bet the fabric would be something synthetic since it's a desert planet, but here you could go for a linen or bamboo fabric.

Yoda: " I sense much fear in you." to Anakin.
J: "Yoda's a good senser."

Queen Amidala: "I pray you'll bring sanity back to the Senate."
J: "She prays? She believes in God."

Yoda: "May the Force be with you."
J: "And also with you. (giggle) Church." (That's Daddy's joke, now she knows the reference first hand.)

Queen Amidala: "Jar Jar, I need your help."
J: "Oh! Gungans have fine armies!!!" (J puts it all together and remembers what Jar Jar said earlier in the film.)

Fabulous Fabric

Now how could I pass up a day about F without mentioning my wife's fabric. She sell sewing stuff by the seashore, or at least I feel a little tongue-tied when I talk about it. Her shop is SomeArtFabric.com and I've been the background guy for a few years now. I've created a back-end for her entire website using FileMaker, another F, but it's also truly worth mentioning.

When we travel to events like International Quilt Festival/Cincinnati this week, we meet all sorts of people who just rave over her fabric.

It's great quilt shop quality stuff. 100% cotton, but apparently so many little quilt shops are closing in the US, the quilting public is hungry to see some wild fabrics. Mrs. SF is great with color and she buys for the shop the fabrics that speak to her, so it's really worked for her.

B is for Boxers in More Ways than One

"B" is for boxers. You know like the dog.

The first dog I ever lived with was a boxer.

She had no tail so she wagged her whole body. She was a licky dog. She was always licking her muzzle nervously, more so when she was excited to see you.

"B" is also for boxers. You know the shorts, you may wear under your grown up pants.

I know a few ladies who like to sew and they've taken to sewing me and my brother-in-laws boxers every year for the holidays.

So far, I've collected boxers with bowling pins, coffee beans and mugs, and stars.
